About Argus Media
Argus, an independent media organisation headquartered in London, boasts a global presence with 29 offices and a workforce of over 1,300. The company excels in the publication of market reports and business intelligence, and offers a range of services including data provision, analysis, and consultancy across various industries.
As a trusted authority for price assessments, market commentary and news, Argus’ data is instrumental in physical trade indexation. This invaluable resource supports the strategic planning and analysis needs of businesses, governments, and international agencies alike.
The Challenge
Amid significant global expansion, Argus Media had revised its IT strategy, moving towards a cloud-first approach. This decision was made to overcome the limitations of their previous solutions. However, this transition inadvertently led to the creation of data silos, which presented challenges in data capacity, management, and escalated costs while also diverting valuable IT resources.
In parallel to these changes, Argus Media aspired to achieve global accessibility for its data – essentially creating a unified global campus. With the aim of consolidating their data into a globally accessible repository, the team hoped to:
- Enhance the storage performance at branch offices to boost productivity and save costs.
- Enable and promote cross-business collaboration across the organisation.
- Shift their team’s focus towards high-impact projects that truly benefit the organisation.
Argus Media needed a partner that could help:
- Enhance the storage performance at branch offices to boost productivity and save costs.
- Enable and promote cross-business collaboration across the organisation.
- Shift their team’s focus towards high-impact projects that truly benefit the organisation.
The Nephos Solution
To address the challenges posed by data silos and improve overall performance, Argus Media partnered with Nephos Technologies.
Nephos Technologies proposed a strategy that involved a significant shift from relying on local NAS silos. Instead, the solution centred on leveraging cloud storage as a centralised repository for all of Argus Media’s data. This approach promised a more cost-effective storage solution, eliminating the need for expensive on-premises infrastructure and the replication of data across multiple locations.
To maintain the high performance required by Argus Media’s branch offices, Nephos implemented cloud storage gateway devices. These devices acted as a bridge between Argus’s local networks and the cloud storage environment, ensuring that data accessed frequently was cached locally. This smart caching mechanism significantly enhanced local storage performance, making data access swift and reliable, without the latency often associated with accessing data stored in the cloud.
By adopting this comprehensive approach, which integrates cloud storage for enhanced data availability and security, a cloud-based central repository, and leveraging Nasuni to optimise local storage performance, Argus Media was able to streamline data access and management throughout the company.
”They have been an absolutely superb partner. I would recommend them to anybody!

The Results
Nephos’ solution significantly transformed Argus Media’s data management and operational efficiency. For the first time, global file sharing was seamless, with advanced file locking eliminating the need for traditional backups and offsite data protection. Moving to cloud storage with Nasuni’s snapshot features made data accessible everywhere, secure, and compliant with strict regulations.
This approach, focusing on active data in local offices, greatly reduced the need for extensive storage at remote sites, saving over £150,000 annually. These savings allowed Argus Media to invest more in core business areas, fostering innovation and improving collaboration across global teams. Through this data management overhaul, Argus Media improved data accessibility and security, and demonstrated efficient cost management.
